IELTS TRAINING FORMAT

There are two test versions of the IELTS, Academic and General Training. The duration of the exam is 2.45 hours. The Reading and Writing sections are different in both the sections while speaking and listening sections are same.

LISTENING

30 minutes test in which you have to listen four recordings of English native speakers and give answers from their conversation and monologues.

READING

60 minutes test consists of 40 questions to test reading skills of candidates that includes, reading for main ideas, gist, and details as well as understand the writer’s opinion, purpose, attitude, etc.

WRITING

The Writing Task 1 of the IELTS Academic test requires you to write a summary of at least 150 words in response to a particular graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done). This task tests your ability to select and report the main features, to describe and compare data, identify significance and trends in factual information, or describe a process.
IELTS Writing Task 2 requires you to write at least 250 words. You will be presented with a topic and will be tested on your ability to respond by giving and justifying an opinion, discussing the topic, summarizing details, outlining problems, identifying possible solutions and supporting what you write with reasons, arguments and relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

SPEAKING

The Speaking Sub-test takes between 11 and 14 minutes. The Sub-test consists of an interview with a trained examiner, and is recorded on a tape recorder. There are 3 parts to the Speaking Sub-test.
Part 1: you answer questions about your home life or family life, work or study, your interests and other familar topics of a general nature to reveal your background. (4-5 minutes)
Part 2: you are given exactly 1 minute to prepare yourself to talk about a particular topic. The instructions to guide your talk are written on a card given to you by the examiner. (3-4 minutes)
Part 3: you have a discussion with the examiner based on themes connected to the topic given in Part 2. This part of the test requires discussion of more abstract ideas. (4-5 minutes)

READING

60 minutes test with three parts. In Part 1, 2-3 short factual texts, In Part 2, two short factual texts related to work, In Part 3, long text based on topic of general interest. Texts are extracts from newspaper, books, magazines, and guidelines.

WRITING

60 minutes test, In Part 1, you have to write a letter explaining the situation or request for getting information. Letter style can be formal, semi-formal or personal. In Part 2, you have to write an essay in response to any problem or argument, a point of view in a completely personal style.
